To:  West Galveston Island Property Owners Association Members

MINUTES:  The minutes of our March 16, 2013, meeting is on our website, http://www.wgipoa.com/tx/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/poa346.pdf.

MEETING:  The next meeting will be on April 20, 2013 beginning at 8:30 AM for breakfast burritos and coffee and 9:00 AM for the meeting at the Galveston Country Club, 14228 Stewart Road.

Please note we are back at the Galveston Country Club for this meeting.

PROGRAM:  MEETING:  Our guest speaker will be Dr. Bill Merrell, the George P. Mitchell ’40 Chair in marine sciences at Texas A&M University, Galveston.  Dr. Merrell will present his “Ike Dike” concept, a coastal barrier protecting the Houston/Gulf region from a hurricane storm surge.

Dr. Merrell has served as president of the H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment, vice chancellor for Strategic Programs of The Texas A&M University System, vice president for Research Policy of Texas A&M University, president of Texas A&M University at Galveston, and assistant director of the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Merrell gave an “Ike Dike” presentation to the WGIPOA in early 2009 not too long after Hurricane Ike devastated Galveston.  The “Ike Dike” presentation we will see on April 20 is the most updated version and is outstanding.  Dr. Merrell has visited the Netherlands since “Ike” to observe the type of surge protection systems they use to hold back the damaging North Sea storms.  Most of the Netherlands is below sea level and they have successfully combated the storm surge problem.  Dr. Merrell would like to use these concepts for a Galveston surge protection system.

This is a great presentation and involves where you live so please invite your neighbors and friends and come for breakfast burritos at 8:30 AM.
